Infrastructure: FG Orders Power Gencos to Comply or Face Disconnection

The Federal Government has drawn a line in the sand for Nigeria’s power generation companies (Gencos), warning them to adopt free governor control on all turbines or risk being disconnected from the national grid.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which issued the directive, explained that the free governor control mechanism automatically adjusts generation output in real-time whenever there is a fluctuation in grid frequency. This, it said, is critical to preventing the frequent collapses that have crippled electricity supply across the country.

Pull-quote: “Failure to comply will attract heavy penalties, including outright disconnection from the grid.”

For years, Nigeria’s national grid has suffered repeated system failures—sometimes plunging the entire country into blackouts. Experts blame part of the instability on non-compliance by some Gencos who operate their machines in manual mode, prioritising profits over stability.

By enforcing strict technical standards, NERC aims to ensure that each power plant contributes to balancing supply with demand, reducing the risk of grid collapse and easing the burden on consumers already frustrated with erratic power supply and rising electricity tariffs.

The move signals the government’s resolve to strengthen regulatory oversight, but analysts caution that enforcement must be fair, transparent, and backed by investment in transmission infrastructure to yield lasting results.
