Kanu, Okocha, Amokachi set for African Legends match in Abuja

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has confirmed that he will feature alongside Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George, and other African football legends in the African Legends United Gala Match, scheduled for March 28 in Abuja.
Kanu made the announcement on Thursday during the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Festival in Abuja, explaining that the match aims to celebrate African culture and empower grassroots communities.
“It’s happening in Nigeria, and the legends will be there, doing what we do best. Everyone will have a good time. We are part of this project to promote African culture while also uplifting grassroots communities,” he said.
The former Arsenal and Inter Milan striker added that all participating players were motivated by a desire to inspire young Africans and encourage unity across the continent.
“It’s called legends because we are giving back. That’s why we all agreed to take part. Myself, Jay Jay Okocha, Daniel Amokachi, and others will feature in the match on March 28,” Kanu explained.

Also speaking at the festival, former Cameroon international Eyong Enoh revealed that the festival will run from March 26 to 28, with the legends’ match taking place on the final day at Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Enoh emphasized that the match is designed to foster African unity, noting that divisions between African nations were largely imposed during the colonial era.
“Initiatives like this are crucial. While many projects and promises exist, taking real action is what makes the difference. The only difference between Cameroon and Nigeria is a line drawn during colonial times. I don’t see myself merely as Cameroonian; I see myself as African.
“The AfCFTA Festival is about transforming lines that divide into lines that unite. It’s the most practical initiative to bring Africa together. Our motto is one Africa, one market, one future—that’s why I’m part of this,” Enoh said.
In addition to the legends’ match, the African Continental Free Trade Area Festival will also host startup exhibitions and cultural showcases, highlighting African innovation and heritage.
