The United States has provided military equipment to Nigerian security agencies to support ongoing counter-terrorism and security operations across the country.
The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in a post on X. According to AFRICOM, the assistance is part of broader efforts to strengthen operational cooperation with West African partners and help Nigerian forces combat extremist threats.
This development follows a Christmas Day airstrike by the US targeting Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants in Sokoto. US President Donald Trump had previously warned of further action against extremist groups accused of targeting Christians.
In the X post, AFRICOM stated: “U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and highlights our shared security partnership.”
Earlier in October 2025, Trump had designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over allegations of attacks on Christians. He called the situation “disgraceful” and threatened military action if the government did not protect its Christian population.
AFRICOM added that the new supplies are intended to strengthen Nigeria’s security forces in counter-terrorism efforts, and form part of a long-term US strategy to enhance regional security cooperation.
Nigeria has faced repeated attacks from armed groups in recent years, underscoring the need for sustained international support. The federal government has not yet issued an official response regarding the latest US assistance.
